Most people will never meet a fox up close. They may admire one from a distance or see one in a nature documentary, but few understand the intelligence, emotional depth, and individuality these remarkable animals possess.

In this episode of the Better Life for Animals podcast, host Cheryl Moss welcomes Nicole Navarro, founder and executive director of Pawsitive Beginnings, a fox sanctuary in Key Largo, Florida. Nicole shares her extraordinary journey from volunteering with rescued wildlife to creating a sanctuary that gives foxes rescued from the fur trade and exotic pet industry a second chance at life.

Her story is one of compassion, purpose, and the belief that every life matters.

How Two Rescued Foxes Changed Everything

Nicole’s passion for foxes didn’t begin with a lifelong dream of opening a sanctuary.

After surviving Hurricane Irma, she volunteered at a unique animal sanctuary located within the Monroe County Sheriff’s facility in Key West. There she met two surrendered foxes whose trust and affection transformed her life.

As she learned more about the fur industry, Nicole realized these intelligent animals desperately needed advocates willing to tell their stories.
That realization eventually led to the founding of Pawsitive Beginnings in 2020.

The Hidden Reality of the Fur Trade

Many people assume fur farming is something that happens overseas.

Nicole explains that while the number of U.S. fur farms has declined, dozens still operate across the country, breeding foxes solely for luxury fashion.

Some foxes survive only because they are considered “undesirable” by fur farmers due to injuries or imperfections in their coats. Through relationships with organizations able to negotiate legal surrenders, Nicole has been able to rescue several of these animals and provide them with permanent, loving homes.

Foxes Have Rich Emotional Lives

One of the most eye-opening parts of the conversation is Nicole’s description of fox behavior.

She explains that foxes:

● Form lifelong family bonds.
● Display affection through grooming.
● Experience grief and loss.
● Express joy, curiosity, fear, and playfulness.
● Retain their wild instincts even after generations in captivity.

Each fox at Pawsitive Beginnings has a unique personality, reminding visitors that they are individuals rather than commodities.

Healing Happens on Both Sides of the Fence

While the sanctuary is not open to the general public, Nicole partners with organizations serving women and children recovering from trauma.

These carefully supervised visits have created remarkable moments of healing.

Children who have experienced severe abuse often form immediate, silent connections with the rescued foxes. Nicole believes the animals recognize emotional distress and respond with extraordinary sensitivity.

The relationships have become one of the sanctuary’s most meaningful programs, demonstrating that rescued animals can help people heal simply by being themselves.

Standing Firm on Ethical Values

Nicole refuses to compromise her principles.

Even when offered rescued foxes from private exotic breeders, she has declined if accepting them could indirectly support the exotic pet industry.

Version 1.0.0

She believes sanctuaries must remain consistent with their mission and never contribute financially to industries that exploit animals.

Her commitment to strong ethical boundaries has earned the respect of supporters who value integrity as much as rescue work.

Every Dollar Is a Vote

Nicole encourages everyone to take simple but meaningful action.

Consumers can help reduce demand for fur by refusing to purchase fur products and by avoiding companies that continue selling fur, even if buying unrelated products from those brands.

She reminds listeners that every purchase sends a message, and consumer choices play an important role in changing industry practices.

A Children’s Book Inspired by a Rescue Fox

Nicole has expanded her educational mission by writing a children’s book titled Reef the Fox Finds His Purpose.

Based on the true story of one of the sanctuary’s rescued foxes, the book introduces young readers to compassion, resilience, and the importance of treating every animal with kindness and respect.

Supporting Pawsitive Beginnings

Pawsitive Beginnings relies entirely on public donations to care for its rescued foxes.

Supporters can help by:

● Sponsoring a fox through a virtual adoption program.
● Donating toward veterinary care and daily expenses.
● Purchasing items from the sanctuary’s wish list.
● Following and sharing the sanctuary’s educational content.
● Choosing not to support companies that profit from the fur trade.
